Origins
서양화를 전공하며 오랜 시간 다듬어온 저만의 화풍은 옻칠의 깊은 물성과 나전의 영롱한 빛, 그리고 고전 민화의 솟구치는 생명력을 만나 완전히 새로운 결을 갖추게 되었습니다.
민화가 품은 소재의 다채로움과 자유로운 붓길은 옻이라는 자연의 재료를 만나 한층 더 깊은 울림을 발하고, 민화의 대담하고 활력 넘치는 색채는 나전을 거치며 오색빛깔의 찰나로 살아납니다.
오랜 시간 축적해 온 서양화적 시선과 감각으로 전통을 낯설고도 아름답게 해체하고 재해석했습니다. 칠과 빛, 그리고 생명의 서사가 교차하는 이 공간에서 저만의 새로운 예술적 화법을 나누고자 합니다.
Cultivated over years through Western painting, my artistic visual style has found a new texture—a fresh resonance—where the profound materiality of Ottchil (Korean natural lacquer), the iridescent shimmer of Najeon (mother-of-pearl inlays), and the surging vitality of classical Minhwa (folk painting) converge.
The rich variety of motifs and unbounded brushwork inherent in Minhwa gain a deeper depth through the organic essence of lacquerware, while its bold and dynamic palette awakens into luminous, fleeting hues through the embrace of mother-of-pearl.
Drawing from years of perspective and sensibility rooted in Western art, I have gently deconstructed and reinterpreted heritage into something poetically unfamiliar yet deeply beautiful. At this intersection of lacquer, light, and the narrative of life, I invite you to share in my new artistic expression.
TIMESTREAM
저에게 작업이란 시간을 겹겹이 묶어 보관하고, 그 축적의 순간들로 마음을 채워가는 정밀한 일상입니다.
지나온 모든 과거가 묵묵히 흙이 되어 오늘의 나를 지탱하듯, 옻칠은 흘러가는 시간의 숨결을 고스란히 기록합니다. 매일 다른 깊이의 색을 지어내며 스스로를 비워내는 수행의 시간 속에서, 수십 번의 얇은 칠을 올리고 다시 그것을 긁어내는 침묵의 과정을 반복합니다.
그렇게 아득한 시간을 견뎌낸 피부 아래로, 바로 밑층에 묵혀두었던 아련한 빛깔이 살포시 얼굴을 내밀어 듭니다. 이 첩첩이 쌓아 올린 세월의 겹이야말로 나를 이루는 시간들이며, 동시에 저마다의 궤적을 그리며 묵묵히 삶을 이어가는 우리 모두의 모습과 닮아 있습니다. 세상에 단 하나뿐인 깊은 울림은 그렇게 완성됩니다.
작품 앞에 선 당신이 잠시 거친 숨을 고를 수 있기를 바랍니다. 겹겹의 시간 위에 차분히 마주한 스스로에게 온전히 집중할 수 있기를, 그리고 옻이라는 자연이 품어낸 묵직하고도 따스한 생명의 에너지가 당신의 마음에 가만히 닿아 깊은 온기로 번져가기를 소망합니다.
For me, the creative process is an act of capturing, preserving, and layering time—a quiet ritual that steadily fills the heart.
Just as the sediment of our past quietly forms the foundation of who we are today, Ottchil (lacquerware) records the silent flow of time. Creating new hues each day feels like a contemplative discipline, endlessly applying paper-thin layers of lacquer and patiently sanding them back. Through this iterative cycle, the gentle shades buried just beneath the surface begin to softly reveal themselves. What emerges is a depth as profound as the layers of time themselves—a singular piece of art, echoing the unique journey of every human life.
Standing before these works, I hope the viewer finds a moment of tranquil stillness to turn inward and connect fully with themselves. May the enduring warmth and resilient energy distilled within this natural material reach softly into your heart, offering a quiet, comforting embrace.
INTROSPECTION
저의 작업은 우리가 삶을 살아가며 끊임없이 스스로에게 던지는 근본적인 질문, 그 아늑한 내적 성찰에서 출발합니다.
그 깊은 질문에 대한 답은 언제나 자연이 묵묵히 전해주는 단순한 교훈과 고유한 철학 속에 있었습니다. 유려하게 흐르는 곡선의 형태는 깊이 있는 변화와 아득한 생명력, 그리고 끊임없이 움직이는 역동감을 품고 있습니다.
자연의 선이 그려내는 직관적인 미학을 화면 위에 차곡차곡 담아내며, 삶의 본질과 마주하는 정성의 시간을 만들어내고자 했습니다. 찰나의 흔적들이 유기적으로 이어지는 이 공간에서, 저마다 품고 있는 삶의 가장 깊은 문장들을 가만히 들여다볼 수 있기를 바랍니다.
My work begins with quiet introspection, questioning the fundamental truths of life that we all inevitably ask ourselves.
The answers to these lingering questions are often found in the simple lessons and organic philosophy of nature. The flowing contours of curved forms embody a profound depth, an ever-changing vitality, and an intuitive sense of dynamic movement.
I capture these aesthetic qualities on the canvas, channeling nature’s intuitive lines into a space for contemplative thought. Within this organic harmony of form and rhythm, I invite you to turn inward and quietly face the deepest reflections of your own journey.
HEART ONE
옻은 태초의 자연이 선물한 가장 귀하고 정직한 천연의 재료이자, 세월의 풍파를 견뎌내는 고결한 보존성을 품고 있습니다.
수십 번의 얇은 칠을 겹겹이 올리고, 길고 지루한 건조의 시간을 인내하며, 다시 사포로 보듬고 닦아내어 비로소 영롱한 광택을 얻어내는 과정. 이 고된 칠의 행위는 단순한 작업이 아닌, 스스로를 다스리는 묵직한 집념의 예술입니다.
금과 은, 나전과 난백, 그리고 고유한 자연의 조각들이 옻이라는 매개체를 만나 예상치 못한 오색의 우연을 만들어냅니다. 자연이 스스로 머금고 변형되며 자라나는 이 신비로운 연금술은, 정해진 답 없이 수많은 경우의 수를 견뎌내는 우리의 삶과 깊이 닮아 있습니다. 동양적 미학의 정수이자 자연의 숨결을 품은 이 첫 번째 여정을 통해, 인내와 우연이 피워낸 순수한 창조의 순간을 함께 나누고자 합니다.
Ottchil (natural lacquer) is one of nature’s most precious and enduring gifts, possessing a time-honored preservation and resilience unmatched by modern synthetic materials.
The process of endlessly applying paper-thin layers, waiting through long drying hours with steadfast patience, and meticulously polishing the surface to reveal a deep radiance makes Ottchil a true art of discipline and tenacity.
Here, precious metals, mother-of-pearl, and organic elements converge within the natural lacquer, spawning vibrant, unforeseen textures. As the medium absorbs, transforms, and breathes on its own, it yields unpredictable outcomes that mirror the infinite possibilities of human life. Through this foundational series—an ode to Eastern aesthetics—I invite you to experience a creative journey born from endurance, chance, and the profound harmony of nature.
LOVE FLOWERS
저마다의 고유한 빛을 품은 꽃들이 한데 어우러질 때, 비로소 피어나는 극적인 아름다움이 있습니다. 저는 그 찬란한 조화로움 속에서 제 삶이 지나온 자유로운 기억들을 가만히 유영하는 꿈을 꿉니다.
화폭 위로 옮겨진 꽃의 물성은 저만의 조형 언어를 통해 새롭게 해체되고 재해석됩니다. 화려한 색채와 잘게 부서진 면, 그리고 선의 집합이 만들어내는 운문적이고 시적인 리듬감이 있는가 하면, 때로는 단색화 특유의 소박함과 깊은 여백이 빚어내는 산문적인 정적이 그 안에 공존합니다.
규칙과 변형, 채워짐과 비워짐이 교차하는 이 화면은 저의 내면에 존재하는 정서와 삶을 담아내는 정직한 통로입니다. 내 곁에서 숨 쉬는 가장 가까운 존재들과 일상의 모든 것들을 향한 깊은 감사함. 그 따뜻한 마음을 진솔하고도 영원한 아름다움으로 화면 위에 담아내고자 합니다.
While every flower holds its own singular beauty, it is when their diverse shapes and hues intertwine that their true magnificence blossoms. Within this radiant harmony, I dream of quietly tracing the free-flowing memories of my life.
Once transferred onto the canvas, the physical essence of the flower is gently deconstructed and reinterpreted into my own visual language. At times, vibrant colors, fragmented planes, and interwoven lines create a rich, poetic rhythm; at other times, a quiet stillness emerges through the modest simplicity of monochrome and empty space.
This canvas—where order and distortion, fullness and void intersect—serves as an honest conduit for my innermost emotions and life. Driven by a profound gratitude for the people and nature closest to me, my wish is to capture their warm, heartfelt beauty eternally within these works.
