TIMESTREAM
나는 작업의 특성상 시간을 기록하고,
저장하고 쌓아가면서 마음을 채운다는 느낌을 많이 받는다.
과거의 모든 밑거름이 오늘의 나를 이루는 우리의 인생사처럼 옻칠은 시간의 흐름을 기록하고, 매일 새로운 색을 만들며 수행을 하듯 아주 엷게 수십번 덪칠하고 긁어내기를 반복하다보면 바로 아래층에 칠한 색이 살짝 드러나며 그 첩첩이 쌓인 시간들 만큼이나
깊고 세상에 하나뿐인 작품이 완성된다.
- 모든 이들의 삶처럼.
내 작품을 보는 관람자가 작품 앞에 서서 차분히 작품과 마주한 자신에게
온전히 집중할 수 있는 시간과 옻이 가진 재료 특유의 따뜻하고 강한 삶의 에너지를 받을수 있기를 바란다.
Due to the nature of my craft, I feel my work is all about fulfilling the mental state of our mind by recording, saving, and accumulating physical time that’s spent; just like our life where all the foundations of the past make up who we are today, lacquer records the passage of time and creates new colors every day to implement. By applying thin layers of color and scraping carefully over dozen of times as an ode to how we persevere/endure what life has for us. The previously painted color is slightly revealed underneath the top layer during this procedure, which creates depth and one-of-a-kind touch to the work. As a unique piece emerge, it’s a testament to the accumulated time spent for this completed work - just like a record of everyone's life.
I hope to give the viewers who stand alone calmly facing my artworks the opportunity to be able to concentrate fully on them and to receive the warm and strong energy of life that is unique to the materials of lacquer.
INTROSPECTION
내 작업은 우리가 살아가며 공통적으로 가지는 삶의 근본적인 질문들을 묻는
내적 성찰을 기반으로 한다. 그 질문에 대한 대답을 자연이 주는 단순한 교훈과 철학에서 영감을 얻고
곡선의 형태에서 오는 깊이와 변화무상한 생명력, 역동감, 그것과 직관되는 이미지 고유의 미적특성을 도출하고 이를 화면에 담았다.
My work is based on introspection and the fundamental questions of life that we constantly ask ourselves.
My answer to that question has often been inspired by the simple lessons and philosophy that nature gives and I tried to express it through the depth and the ever-changing vitality that comes from the shape of the curve which intuitively bring in the dynamic sense and the unique aesthetic characteristics of the image.
HEART ONE
옻칠은 귀하고 값진 천연재료다.
지금껏 인류가 개발한 어떠한 화학 도료보다도 우수한 보존 효과를 가지고있다.
옻칠은 많은 시간을 필요로 하고 아주 엷게 수십번의 덪칠을 하고 긁어내기를 반복하며 인내를 갖고 건조시킨뒤
사포로 닦아 광택을 내야 하는 고된 과정때문에 집념의 예술이라 할 수 있다.
재료 또한 금분, 은분, 알루미늄분,
금속, 곡식, 천, 난백, 나전 등등 수없이 많고 다양하다.
옻칠예술은 서양에서는 따라할 수 없는 동양만의 차별화된 예술분야라 생각한다.
옻을 통한 작품활동은 여러모로 우리의 인생과 닮아있다. 옻으로 작업하는 인내의 과정동안 세상이 스스로 베어 들고 스스로 변형하여 만들어 지며 작가조차 그 결과물을 완벽하게 예상할 수 없는
여러가지 경우의 수가 만들어낸 창조물이라 할 수 있다.
Lacquer is one of the most precious and valuable natural material. Lacquer dries to a hard, durable and smooth surface; surpassing any other chemical coating developed by mankind.
Lacquer is an art of commitment. It is a laborious art that requires immense patience - a process that requires several dozen rounds of thin coatings, scraping back, drying and a final careful polish with a fine sandpaper.
The decorative treatments and materials that can be worked with lacquer are numerous and diverse. Lacquer is sometimes painted with precious metals, in gold and silver; inlaid with mother-of-pearl, grains, cloth, wood, or mud powder, and even dusted with gold.
In my view, the process of eastern lacquer is unique and different than any process that has since been developed in the west. Artworks that have lacquer resemble our lives in many ways.
Through the long process of working with lacquer, lacquer gets refined and transformed by nature and also by the hand of the artist, which is unpredictable and requires mastery.
LOVE FLOWERS
꽃은 저마다 아름답지만 여러 모양과 색을 지닌 꽃들이 함께할때면 아름다움은 극대화 된다.
그리고 그 모습 속에서 곱게 바라보는 내 삶의 자유로운 기억들을 찾는 꿈을 꾸어본다.
표현된 물성으로서의 꽃은 화폭에 옮겨지는 순간 새롭게 각색된 조형세계로 재해석되어 규칙의 조화인 보편성을 가짐과 동시에 변형과 왜곡을 통한 내적인 상징성으로 감성을 드러내기도 한다. 즉, 미적 표현대상으로서 자신만의 방식으로 표현하고 있다.
작품에는 화려한 색채와 작은 면 그리고 선의 집합으로 표현적인 인상을 강조하는데 중점을 두기도 하지만, 때로는 단색화와 같은 소박함과 공간을 통한 정적을 나타내고 있다. 이는 조형과정에서 나타나는 현상들로 시적언어의 유희와도 같은 운문적인 풍부한 이야기가
존재하고, 때론 간결한 산문적 요소가 공존한다고 볼 수 있는 것이다.
삶의 또 다른 표현 형식인 조형창작의 시간들이 소중하듯, 가장 가까이 있는
모든 것 역시 감사하며 소중하고 그 마음을 작품 안에 진솔한 아름다움으로 영원히 담아내고 싶었다.
Love Flower and Love People.
Flowers are individually beautiful. However, when flowers with different shapes and colors come together, they undoubtedly maximize the level of beauty.
Through this I dream about finding the memories of freedom in a heartwarming way.
The flower as a subject matter and converted to the canvas will be newly interpreted as formative art. Furthermore while embracing universality which constitute the balance of rule, it simultaneously expresses internal symbolism through change and different amplification. In short, it comes alive in its own way as an artistically expressive subject matter.
Although bright colors are present in the work, key areas integrate with line work together to focus on expressive reflection. It also depicts a sense of humbleness and space found in singular color art, thus expressing serenity.
These are phenomena expressed in formative art process that reflects a full verse-like story, which is like pleasure from a poetic language. Furthermore simple prosaic factors therefore coexist within.
As special as the time spent on formative art creation, there stands another expression of life. Everything that we think is important to us must be given thanks for,
and therefore I strive to capture that emotion as a true beauty that withstand time.
